1Password Gains Passage to More Secure Authentication

By

Passwords are unavoidable, and for good reason. However, employees often lack basic password hygiene and put their companies at risk of a breach. So, maybe it’s more appropriate to say security is unavoidable, but passwords aren’t.  If companies were to take a passwordless approach, passkeys or facial recognition would replace risky passwords for secure access.

Not only does passwordless authentication provide better security, it provides better employee productivity and engagement and better compliance. From a business perspective, passwordless authentication improves top- and bottom-line revenue by eliminating forgotten customer passwords and reducing sign-up friction.

To further drive the future of authentication, 1Password acquired Passage, a developer-first passwordless authentication company. Passage's technology allows 1Password to launch a passwordless authentication platform for enterprises for a more secure end-user experience across any platform or device.

"With today's Passage acquisition, we are committing to giving businesses and end users what they want and deserve: the convenience of passwordless without compromising security," said Jeff Shiner, CEO of 1Password.

With 1Password and Passage Identity, developers, businesses and consumers accelerate the adoption of passkeys as expertise is brought by the Passage team including CEO Cole Hecht and Chief Technology Officer Anna Pobletts.

Passkeys remove the frustration of forgotten passwords and minimize exposure to phishing attacks, so the Passage team is set to focus on developing passkey-first authentication for consumer-facing businesses. This solution’s availability is expected in early 2023 for beta.

"1Password's market leadership and human-centric mission make them a natural fit to achieve our shared vision of a secure, user-friendly experience that enables businesses to deliver a frictionless and safe experience to users on any device," said Hecht.

If passwordless is the future of authentication, companies need help navigating through any complexity. 1Password and Passage assist and empower companies to work toward simple digital experiences.
