Deliver a More Immersive Classroom Experience with WiMi Holographic Remote Education

By

COVID-19 came in 2020, and out came one thing that most educators and parents were unsure would work; that is, remote education. But colleges and universities still use remote education today, as it gives students on-the-go access to educational materials, and students can participate in classes at any time (and from anywhere) with an internet connection. This is useful for people who live in remote areas, have busy schedules or are unable to attend traditional classes for other reasons.

Still, some questions arise when it comes to remote education. One is finding ways to keep students motivated and engaged with the teaching material. From a personal point of view, I went back to school during the pandemic, and I remember professors (particularly in science courses) saying “I wish you all could see the results of this in person,” when they would lead a science experiment or show the class an interesting find. At times, it felt like watching a science documentary. Surely, classes in other fields went through similar issues.

So, what is needed is a way to bring a little bit of that “physical” classroom experience to remote education. WiMi Hologram Cloud has a solution for that with the development of a real-time interactive holographic remote education management system.

The system generates real-time 3D images locally with 3D image reconstruction technology and uses a depth sensor to acquire and pre-process the data. This breakthrough technology removes the background and creates a foreground mask that contains only the object itself, resulting in a 3D model that is surfaced using the holographic algorithm technique using the point cloud data input.

After the textured 3D model of the local object is reconstructed, it is transferred to a remote location over the network. Then, the locally generated 3D model with textures is displayed at the remote site in real-time, enabling local and remote users to interact with each other via telepresence.

After hearing what it does, one question that comes to mind is whether home networks are able to handle the system itself, especially in homes that do not have the fastest speeds. But in this case, there’s no need to worry. The WiMi interactive holographic education management system uses 5G to realize real-time virtual interaction, improving distance education's efficiency and quality.

This technology is highly promising and expected to become more widely used, especially with the upcoming 5G and AI-powered applications. Holographic technology gives students a strong visual impact and immersive experience, enriches teachers' classroom presentation aids, increases the interest in classroom teaching and effectively improves students' learning efficiency and expertise.
